曾接觸過法政類科的人應該對Hawthorne這個字不會陌生。
Hawthorne Headhunters（http://www.myspace.com/hawthorneheadhunter）是由
I, Ced（http://www.myspace.com/ced74）、
Black Spade（http://www.freshselects.net/blackspadeobama）和
Proh Mic（http://www.myspace.com/prohmic）三人組成的製作團隊，而這張經由
DJ Needles（http://www.myspace.com/djneedles）混音、可供免費或贊助付費下載的
HVW8 RECORDS x FRESH SELECTS present…Hawthorne Headhunters Mixtape，是近期我聽
得很仔細的專輯。
先從這首歌曲下手，She Wanna。

She Wanna是今年年初便找得到的歌曲，這支live video的人員就是接下來的專輯班底
（但控制團體主節奏的I, Ced並未於video中現身）。
一開始坐著的那位是Black Spade。他在2008年發行個人專輯To Serve With Love，在台
灣是交由映象唱片出版（台壓片http://www.hinote.com.tw/product.aspx?sn=4913），節
奏很特別的一張alternative HipHop專輯。
中途出現的女聲是JimiJames（http://www.myspace.com/rahrahgirl）。取了個男性化
的名字，又稱為Rah Rah Girl（http://www.jimijamesmusic.com/）的JimiJames，2006年
曾發行她的音樂碟The Truth（http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/jimij）。這類現場演出經驗超
豐富的女聲，音樂掌握度比一般錄音室歌手要強很多。（請參本板3952篇或關鍵字搜尋）
那位亂晃的男聲就是Coultrain（http://www.myspace.com/coultrainmusic）。個人高
度推崇的Coultrain，來自密西西比河岸的聖路易城，以些許藍調的嗓音，表現慵懶卻自信
的獨特音樂性，無論是出版的個人專輯或與
PPP（http://www.myspace.com/platinumpiedpipers）的合作，都是不可多得的作品。

HVW8 RECORDS x FRESH SELECTS present…Hawthorne Headhunters Mixtape，是7月初
與黑樂網站freshselects（http://www.freshselects.net/）聯名發表之作，基本上它的
歌曲卡接並不是做的很出色；但我們可以不考慮這小瑕疵。這張專輯傳達的要旨，似乎隱
藏著1920年代Hawthorne Experience的精神──
從「科學管理」以理論主導的局限中，找出後來意外促成的「行為科學」理論
科學管理好比是HipHop和R&B的各自論述，行為科學則是「歸納變動中的人的行為」。
Hawthorne Headhunters以HipHop和R&B為根基，藉著不斷的實驗，考慮客觀的「人的因
素」（實證法），或許過程是讓人摸不著頭緒的新手段，結果也純屬未知，但其目的卻是
為廣意範疇的黑人音樂試探新方向。
這是自2005年左右便展開的音樂態度，這張mixtape，只是眾多實驗中的其中一個果實，
期待再五年左右，HipHop與R&B可經由這些默默耕耘的人們手中，媒合出新樂種。這不是憑
空臆測，而是可大膽猜測的未來事實。

The Hawthorne Headhunters is a project made up of the individuals Stoney
Rock (aka Black Spade), Ced No and Proh Mic and was conceived in 2007 at
Ced’s recording studio in that special place between Long Beach and Los
Angeles - Hawthorne, California.
Black Spade’s music is a melting pot of sounds hailing from St. Louis by
way of New York, Detroit, L.A., and everywhere that hip-hop has carved a
distinctive and influential sound for itself. Along with his longtime friend
Ced from St. Louis and Seattle transplant Proh Mic, the trio locked it down
under the shine of Hollywood Park and created songs in the great traditions
of musical heavyweight projects such as Funkadelic, Soulquarians, Native
Tongues Posse and Bloomfield, Kooper, and Stills’ Super Session.
The Hawthorne Headhunters are at the crossroads of funk, soul, jazz and
hip-hop from players already years deep in the game. The music spans these
genres seamlessly blurring the lines between the Southern-influenced tastes
of singer/rapper/producer Black Spade and keyboard and studio controller Ced
No with the next level northern bounce of rapper/producer Proh Mic.
Features guests such as soul singer/songwriter Coultrain and L.A. based
JimiJames. Executive produced by Tyler Gibney.

I know its been a minute but here it is - the highly anticipated mixtape
from the new hybrid supergroup, Hawthorne Headhunters. For those of you who
still don’t know, HH is a three-headed production/vocal beast consisting of
Stoney Rock (better known as Black Spade), Ced No (or I, CED when he’s solo)
and Proh Mic. The group’s debut project, a five-track EP, drops next week on
both vinyl and iTunes as the first release on HVW8 Records.
To go along with the EP, we’ve put together this mixtape, mixed by STL
cohort DJ Needles, featuring the best of the group’s unreleased works over
the years - both solo and as a unit. Also highlighted in the mix are their
solo productions for some of their up-and-coming collaborators, including
Coultrain, Jada Avenue, JimiJames, Stopha Vasquez, and TeLuv - most of which
appear on the EP.
And even with 18 exclusive tracks - this mixtape is just the beginning of a
barrage of material coming from the Hawthorne Headhunters. So stay tuned to

由於是定型之產物
很容易被人們拿來套用
就拿R&B的唱腔這顯而易見的爭點來說
這已經是超過二十年的定義之一了
也就是說
討論 "應如何" 表現音樂
絕對無法創造與突破
只能像台灣的素人歌唱節目一樣
畫地自限的唱著老歌
諸如Hawthorne Headhunters者
則把重心移至 "是如何" 表現音樂
"應如何" 與 "是如何" 的最大不同
就在於有沒有套用 "曲風的法則"
簡單的說
"應如何" 是R&B應該怎麼表現
"是如何" 是這個人是怎麼表現他的R&B
"是如何" 的缺點如同lans所說
可能你會聽到很多人做這種
但你說不出來誰是典範
或許可能哪日有誰足以成為典範
也可能不
而這也是 "是如何" 的優勢
把人的行為看得很重
把人的社會或生活的內心現實活化了
它在還沒有成為一種既定曲風之前
是容許做多方嘗試的
說穿了
這也就是 "歸納" 與 "演繹" 的鬥爭
倘若追究 "曲風" 與 "人的表現" 的關連
它基本上就不是一項結構優良的論題
